Mental toughness changes everything. Before turning 60, I ran the LA Marathon on mindset alone — inspired by my son's decision to challenge himself at Officer Candidate School.
Before turning 60, I ran the LA Marathon. Not on miles of training — on mindset.
It started with my son. He told me he wanted to attend Officer Candidate School. His reason was simple: "I want to challenge myself." That sentence changed something in me.
Instead of traditional marathon training, I immersed myself in military mindset literature — particularly David Goggins' You Can't Hurt Me. I trained my mind to embrace discipline and forward momentum above all else.
Your Mind Will Quit Before Your Body Does
"Your mind will quit 1,000 times before your body ever needs to." That became my mantra. I broke the marathon into smaller moments rather than overwhelming distances. I managed discomfort through structured self-talk:
- "You finish what you start."
- "You stay in control when things get hard."
- "Your mind leads, your body follows."
Discipline Over Motivation
There's an important distinction between motivation and discipline. Motivation is emotional — it comes and goes. Discipline is reliable. The real marathon happens inside your mind before your feet ever hit the pavement.
I applied these same lessons to business, motherhood, leadership, health challenges, and life transitions. Commitment precedes capability. You don't have to be ready — you have to be willing.
The Broader Application
Whether you're training for a race, building a business, navigating a market shift, or stepping into the next chapter of your life — the principles are the same. Mental preparation surpasses physical readiness every time.
Start before you're ready. Finish what you start. Let your mind lead.
